Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls originating in northern Japan, primarily the Tōhoku region, during the 19th century. They were originally made by artisans who also created turned wooden household items, and were often sold as souvenir keepsakes to visitors of hot springs (onsen).
A classic kokeshi is characterized by its simple form: a rounded head and a cylindrical body, often without arms and legs. The body is adorned with hand-painted decorations – typically flowers, leaves, or geometric patterns – while the face is given a serene expression.
There are two main types of kokeshi:
Traditional (dentō-kokeshi): Strictly linked to specific regions and master traditions, with distinct styles that make it possible to determine the doll's origin.
Creative (sōsaku-kokeshi): Freer interpretations that developed during the 20th century, where artists experimented with form, color, and expression.
Today, kokeshi dolls are valued as both art and collectible items. They symbolize simplicity, harmony, and Japanese aesthetics – and are sometimes even believed to bring luck and protection.
