The Mah Jong sofa, designed by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois in 1971, is an iconic piece of furniture that revolutionized the concept of modular sofas. It consists of individual, low modules that can be combined and arranged in a variety of ways to create a personal, flexible seating area. Its design invites creativity, where each module works as a standalone unit but can be put together to suit different spaces and needs.
The playful and relaxed style is characterized by bold patterns and vibrant colors, often dressed in exclusive fabrics from designers such as Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier. The modules are soft, low and invite comfort and relaxation, with deep, padded cushions that give an informal and inviting feel. Mah Jong can function both as a classic sofa, a chaise longue or even as a place for sitting close to the floor, depending on how the modules are placed.
This sofa is as much a work of art as a functional piece of furniture, and its timeless, bohemian aesthetic has made it a design classic.
We chose to reupholster our Mah Jong sofa with the Muru Stripe fabric from Lauritzon, which was the perfect choice to highlight the sofa's playful design. Muru Stripe has an elegant yet lively stripe structure that adds a dynamic feel, just in line with the Mah Jong sofa's unique character. To enhance the visual effect, we chose the colors 951 and 962, two shades that complement each other in a harmonious way.
The combination of these two colors and the Muru Stripe graphic pattern truly captures the essence of Mah Jong – creativity, flexibility and expressive design. The result is a sofa that feels both elegant and playful, and which works just as well in a trendy living room as in a relaxed lounge.
